Monterey

Monterey county has more than a "wine tour" to offer than other wine regions. Not only wineries and vineyards, there are also tourist attractions like the Pebble Beach, Big Sur, Monterey Aquarium and etc... The wine growing is relatively new compared to most of the other California regions. It only started in the 1960s. At first the farmers grew them like any other crops, trying to fetch the highest yield possible. That certainly didn't work and resulted in bad reputations for grapes produced in Monterey.

However, about a decade or more ago, the reputation of the grapes produced in the region has gradually recovered due to successful planting in specific areas of favorable microclimates. In fact more wineries outside Monterey are purchasing from the region for their high quality grapes.

Grape Varieties grown in  Monterey

In the northern part of the Monterey where climate are cooler make it suitable for growing Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. On the other hand, the southern part which is warmer make it ideal for growing Carbenet and Merlot.
